Football seems to move incredibly fast these days doesn’t? I, like so many others grew up with more than one intolerant (and perhaps slightly ignorant) parent/sibling, constantly complaining about the sheer volume of football matches which take place throughout the week. They may have had a point after all..
I finally woke up late on Thursday evening after originally drifting off somewhere in the second half of Manchester City v Juventus. I’m not sure exactly what I was hoping for. I appear to believe that simply because they have money, ambition and quite attractive playing colours, they will ooze sex in every game and seduce even the most ardent skeptic with their shiny new assets. They are extremely boring, and I’m starting to realize that I am one of the last people come to terms with this.
The fact is that in many other areas of life wealth can lead to confidence, which in turn leads to arrogance, which results in risk taking. We hate it but we also love it. Chelsea and Manchester City seem to enjoy only phases 1 and 2.
On Sunday the former take on Arsenal at Stamford Bridge which shouldn’t cause the champions too much concern. Drogba was quoted this week saying that Arsenal are one of his favorite teams. His incredible goal scoring record would seem to back that up royally. Chelsea could afford to totally switch off after going 2 up against Marseille in midweek, whereas Arsenal are returning from a tricky little test in eastern Europe. I expect normal service to be well and truly resumed.
The only other game of any interest this weekend is at Anfield where Liverpool host Blackpool. You could be forgiven for thinking Liverpool only have 11 players and David N’gog on their payroll this season. So far they have used 17 players in the league this season compared to Man Utd 22, Chelsea 20, Arsenal 20, Spurs 23 and Man City 20. After a positively electric game (by Mancini’s standards) in Utrecht last night, will they have enough left to see off Blackpool on Saturday? If they want to stay up this season this is a 6 pointer Blackpool can’t afford to lose..
